Gillian Anderson and Frank Spotnitz Celebrate “The X-Files” for Charity

If you’re an X-Files fan, you’ll want to make your way to Los Angeles this November for a special charity event featuring Gillian Anderson (seen here at the recent “The Age of Stupid” event in NY) and executive producer and writer Frank Spotnitz. The event, which is being run by IBG.Inc. will feature a moderated Q&A panel with Frank Spotnitz, Gillian Anderson and other TBA members of “The X-Files” team*. A limited number of VIP tickets, available for $125, can be purchased here beginning September 22, 2009:

If I were in L.A, I’d be all over this. X-files is one of the greatest shows ever made and its nice to see it still being celebrated.

Do Fringe and The X-Files take place in the same fictional universe? – TV Squad

Do Fringe and The X-Files take place in the same fictional universe?

fringe season two premiere x filesFringe isn’t exactly the most original show on TV. Critics and audiences have been comparing it to The X-Files since it premiered last season. Like The X-Files, Fringe offers up creepy cases of the week and an overarching sci-fi conspiracy/mystery plot that helps build the show’s rich mythology. In The X-Files, the conspiracy thread had something to do with shady government officials working with aliens and black tar – or something like that. In Fringe, it’s called “The Pattern,” a series of unexplainable events all seemingly connected to one William Bell and his company, Massive Dynamic.

Show creators Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and J.J. Abrams have acknowledged the influence of The X-Files on their show, but do Fringe and The X-Files actually take place in the same fictional universe?

During last week’s premiere, there was a reference to the “X designation” during Broyles’ meeting with the senators about the future of the Fringe division. It seemed like the senator was comparing how “the old X designation” and the Fringe division were both draining federal funds by investigating the unknown and unexplained. Was the senator talking about Mulder and Scully’s X-Files?

Interesting take. I would love to see them call Mulder in on a case.

Another X-Files Film becomes a real possibility.

Before X-Files: I Want to Believe was even done filming the talk of a third film was everywhere, especially in the fan community. Producers Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz along with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson all said they were open to more films. In the weeks leading up to the release of the second film, Carter and Spotnitz were quoted saying that a third film would depend on the success of “I Want to Believe”. Unfortunately it performed horribly at the box office and all hope of a film franchise seemed to be lost. Thankfully that all changed this week, first a Fox executive said the future of the X-Files was in the hands of Carter, Spotnitz, Duchovny, and Anderson and then Frank Spotnitz shared his surprise in Fox’s willingness to make another film. It now seems there is hope for more X-Files especially if its a big success on DVD and Blu-ray. If you are a fan, make sure to support the cause by buying the DVD.

X-files Friday Box Office and Site News

I saw the film yesterday and I will post a review later. I will also start publishing the latest news and discussion again after a few days off. The reason I didn’t report any of the news or reviews is because I didn’t read any of it, I wanted to go into the film “clean”.

Several sites are now reporting that X-Files I Want to Believe made between 4 and 5 million on Friday and is on track to make $12 million for the weekend. Most will consider this is a disaster and some are already declaring the franchise dead. That may in fact be the case but it all depends on Fox’s expectations going in. With a small budget of $30 million and very little marketing, this film should still make a decent profit when worldwide box office and DVD sales and rentals are factored in. So if Fox is committed to slowly reviving the franchise with a series of small films, that certainly can be done. If they were expecting a blockbuster, then it looks like that may be it for X-Files fans.
